Wooten earns second USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week award

For the second time this season, UCCS junior Kayla Wooten earned the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Division II National Athlete of the Week award. She won the award after her victory in the six-kilometer race at the Roy Griak Invitational Sept. 29.

Wooten crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 55.8 seconds ahead of the other 192 runners at the University of Minnesota’s Les Bolstad Golf Course. She finished nearly five seconds ahead of the runner up and helped the Mountain Lions finish third among the 22 teams in the standings.

It was her second victory of the season and her first since the Rust Buster Invitational Sept. 1. That win led to her first national athlete of the week award Sept. 4 from the USTFCCCA. She is the only student-athlete in program history to earn the national weekly award.
