Norman Bender, a founding member of the Department of History, died Feb. 15 in Colorado Springs. He was 85. Survivors include his wife, Eugenia; a son, Norman C.; a daughter, Elizabeth C. Jim Rynning, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who was active in Curiosity Unlimited and who is believed to be the oldest person to complete courses at UCCS, died Feb. 17. He was 92. Chrissy Elder, currently head assistant women’s volleyball coach at the University of Central Missouri, is the new women’s volleyball coach at UCCS. The UCCS Athletic Department announced Elder’s hiring Jan. 10. Elder joined the UCM Jennies in 2007 and was promoted to head assistant coach in 2009.
