Theatreworks, Chamber Orchestra bring classic musical to the stage

March 21 through March 24, for one weekend only, the little girl in the red hood, the boy and his cow, the woman with the priceless shoes, the prince, the baker and his wife, the wolf, and the witch venture into the woods at Theatreworks – and you’re invited to join them at Into the Woods In Concert!

The fourth production of the Theatreworks 2023-24 season features collaborations with The Chamber
Orchestra of the Springs and the Colorado Springs Conservatory to bring Stephen Sondheim’s beloved
fairytale classic to life for one weekend only. March 21 to 24, a stellar team of local actors and musicians
bring the story to audiences with a concert staging centering the glorious music and the timeless,
surprising stories from the fairytales you thought you knew.

Theatreworks’ production features an entirely Colorado based cast with new and familiar faces: Javier Abreu, Jennifer DeDominici (Pipeline, Amadeus), Jasmine Gonzalez, Sally Lewis Hybl, Ella Illsley (appearing from the Colorado Springs Conservatory), Cheerish Martin (Steel Magnolias, Taming of the Shrew), Ryan Miller, Leo Nova, Mark Rubald (Twelfth Night), Sam Stuart (appearing from the Colorado Springs Conservatory), and Anne Terze-Schwarz. The exceptional musicians of the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs will bring the score to life.

Theatreworks Artistic Director Caitlin Lowans and multihyphenate Colorado theatre artist J. Chang Tablada lead the production as Director and Musical Director.

Lowans highlights the joy of celebrating the breadth of artistry in our city, aligned on work that feels
timely and unifying: “Into the Woods is a glorious work about paths that are harder than we anticipate, and the unexpected relationships that hold us up in dark times. Who better to celebrate Sondheim’s transcendent art with than a beloved collaborator like J, and a unique opportunity to connect with both the Colorado Springs Conservatory and the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs? As Cinderella says, ‘no one is alone.’”

Tablada echoes the sentiment: “This collaboration is a dream for me—to be working with some our region’s finest musical theatre performers, our city’s incredible orchestra musicians, and the paramount creative team at Theatreworks. And the icing on the cake…it’s SONDHEIM, y’all. Can’t wait for you all to come and experience all the magic with us.”

The creative team includes Pheobe Boynton (costume design), Seth Alison (lighting design), Chris Doiron (sound design), Marie Verdu (props design), Garth Moritz (stage manager), and Skylar Campbell (assistant stage manager).
