Six UCCS employees, split evenly between faculty and staff, will spend the academic year learning how to become more effective leaders who can successfully address the key challenges of a dynamic university as members of the 2019-20 cohort of the CU Excellence in Leadership Program.

The 2019-20 cohort includes:

  • Ralph Giese, director of housing operations, Office of Residence Life and Housing. Giese started at UCCS in 2007 and was recognized with the CU Staff Council Service Excellence Award in 2015. He has also recognized as a UCCS Staff Association Employee of the Quarter, in part for his work to house evacuees, firefighters and National Guard members in the residence halls during the Waldo Canyon Fire in 2012.
  • Melinda Hagemann, assistant vice chancellor of Advancement. Hagemann stared at UCCS in 2012 and was promoted to assistant vice chancellor in July 2019. She oversees development efforts to connect donors to the people, places and programs at UCCS. Hagemann is a 2013 graduate of Leadership Pikes Peak and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Southern Colorado.
  • Martin Key, assistant professor of digital strategy and marketing in College of Business. Key started at UCCS in 2014 and is a member of the search committee for the next dean for the College of Business. He was a UCCS Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Fellow in the 2015-16 academic year. Key’s publication “The Intellectual Ecology of Mainstream Marketing Research: An Inquiry into the Place of Marketing in the Family of Business Disciplines” was awarded the Sheth Foundation Paper of the Year from the Journal of Academic of Marketing Science in 2014.
  • Michael Sanderson, associate director of Sponsored Programs and Research Integrity. Sanderson started at UCCS in 2009 and participated in the National Council of Research Administrators LEAD Me Program in 2015. He was a member of the search committee for the associate vice chancellor of research position in 2018 and serves as the administrator of the Institutional Review Board.
  • Emily Skop, professor and chair of Geography and Environmental Studies. Skop started at UCCS in 2007 and is the founding director of the Global Intercultural Research Center at UCCS. She received the 2018 Distinguished Scholar Award in Ethnic Geography from the American Association of Geographers and the 2017 UCCS Faculty Award Award for Outstanding Contribution to Diversity and Inclusiveness.
  • Regina Winters, assistant dean and senior instructor, School of Public Affairs. Winters started at UCCS in 2010 as a senior instructor and was named assistant dean in 2016. She was a UCCS Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Fellow in the 2016-17 academic year and was named a Founders Fellow by the American Society for Public Administration in 2008.

The program, now in its 19th year, brings together employees from each of the four CU campuses and the system office for monthly workshops on topics like communications, fiscal management and strategic thinking. UCCS members participate in additional monthly meetings with cabinet members and propose a new project for the university to undertake. Andrea Cordova, chief of staff, Chancellor’s Office, serves as the liaison for the program with CU.
