Campus community members are urged to take steps to prevent bicycle theft in UCCS Police’s Oct. 9 Safety Tip Tuesday video.
Lisa Dipzinski, sergeant, and Michael Schaller, officer, UCCS Police Department, advise cyclists to use u-locks and register their bikes on campus.
“When using the u-lock, make sure it’s around the frame of the bike and the bike rack,” Schaller said. “If you simply lock your tire, all the thief has to do is take off your tire.”
Cyclists can register their bike through the UCCS Parking & Transportation Office for free.
Information needed to register include:
- Frame style
- Frame size
- Suspension type
- Serial number
- Any other unique features
“It only takes a few minutes to register, but by giving us that information you’re going to significantly increase the chances of recovering your bike if it’s stolen,” Schaller said.
The serial number will help track the bike if it ends up in a pawn shop and helps verify ownership.
Parking & Transportation Office is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
