For those unable to attend the Feb. 4 University of Colorado Diversity Summit, the keynote address by Columbia provost and social psychologist Claude Steele is now available from the UCCS diversity website, www.uccs.edu/diversity/summit/video.html.
Drawing from his recent book, “Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us,” Steele reviews important research on how the threat of being stereotyped impedes student learning and discusses ways stereotype threat can be counteracted.
“We had an excellent turnout for the Diversity Summit – with more than 150 people from the four CU campuses,” Kee Warner, associate vice chancellor, Diversity and Inclusiveness, said. “But Steele’s message was so powerful that I wanted to make it available to everyone.”
