UCCS to recognize Veterans Day with panel discussion on service dogs, other events

UCCS will recognize Veterans Day with a resource fair, a panel discussion about the role of canines in the military and veterans community as well as other events. veterans-week

The UCCS Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs will host the following events:

  • Reception for staff and faculty veterans and family members, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 7, Public Safety Department training room adjacent to McCord-Herbst Student Veteran Center.
  • Panel discussion: “Animals on Campus: Service Dogs and other animals at UCCS,” 6-8 p.m. Nov. 9, Berger Hall. Representatives from Office of Compliance, Dean of Students, Public Safety, Veteran Health and Trauma Center will discuss service dogs, emotional therapy animals and comfort animals.
  • Marine Corps birthday cake cutting ceremony, noon-1 p.m. Nov. 10, McCord-Herbst Student Veteran Center. To honor the 241st birthday of the United States Marine Corps.
  • Veterans Day Resource Fair, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 11, Dwire Hall Atrium, with representatives from  service, support, volunteer and employment assistance organizations.  A portion of the fair will be dedicated to canines – “The Canine Spectrum of Character: Battle, Service, Therapy, Comfort” will include representatives from organizations providing research on and access to canine involvement in personal support and therapy. Also, a series of talks will be given in Dwire Room 103.  Topics include stress and tips to mitigate stressful situations; canine therapy, comfort and services; and recognition of veteran service dogs with a talk on the history and evolution of canine service in the military.

The Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs will host coffees at various locations on campus during the week: Monday in the University Center, Tuesday and Thursday in Columbine Hall and Wednesday in Osborne Center for Science and Engineeringyc.

The office also is encouraging participation in the 4th annual National Veterans Day Run in Colorado Springs, a 5K or 1-mile walk, 7:11 a.m. Nov. 11 in Memorial Park near downtown Colorado Springs.
