The director of the Arab studies program at the University of Houston will discuss Islam, violence, and the problem of ISIS during a March 9 speech at UCCS.

Emran El-Badawi, assistant professor, Department of Modern and Classical Languages, University of Houston, will share his views about Islam and violence as it relates to the growing threat posed by ISIS in the Middle East beginning at 5 p.m. in Dwire Auditorium, Room 121.

The event is open and free of charge and is sponsored by the Center for Religious Diversity and Public Life at UCCS. Parking is free in Lot 222 and refreshments will be served.

“ISIS and its relationship to Islam, both historical and ideological, is very relevant, yet still mysterious to the Western world ,” Jeff Scholes, assistant professor, Department of Philosophy and director of the center said. “Dr. El-Badawi will shed some needed light on the sources of the conflict as well as offer his ideas on how it can be resolved.”

A member of the University of Houston faculty since 2011, El-Badawi teaches courses on Arabic language, literature, Islamic studies and Middle Eastern history. He established the university’s Arab studies minor and developed the curriculum for a Middle Eastern studies concentration for a bachelor’s degree. He is the author of “The Qur’an and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions” and co-author of the in-progress “A Classical History of the Middle East.”

El-Badawi earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Rutgers University, a master’s in religion from Temple University and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. He has also studied in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

  1. I would like to attend this lecture. However, I am not familiar with the campus and I cannot get the map to “blow up” large enough to see the directions to the parking lot.
Can you please send me specific directions off of I-25 northbound?
    Thanks!
