The UCCS Advancement division hosted a HEROES scholarship reception and gathering on March 13 at UCCS Downtown, to extend appreciation to the donors who have supported the HEROES scholarship. The HEROES scholarship provides enrolled active-duty military students with the funding needed to cover the cost of attendance gap between Military Tuition Assistance and UCCS attendance costs. The scholarship has received generous support from numerous individuals and organizations.

Event guests heard from CU Regent Emerita Sue Sharkey, who was the event emcee, and learned why she supports the scholarship. UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet gave brief remarks about what this scholarship means for active-duty students at UCCS and her family's connection to the scholarship. Crista Hill, director of veteran and military affairs at UCCS, provided impact data on the scholarship. And UCCS student Dionisio Marcelo shared what having the support of the scholarship means to him as a former active-duty student who recently separated from the Army.

"Your generosity makes a real and lasting impact, and I am living proof of that," Marcelo said. "And hey, if anyone ever asks why soldiers should go to college, just tell them: ‘The military taught us how to pull security, but UCCS is teaching us how to secure our future.’”
