Facilities Services takes action to manage rain overflow

The substantial rains from the last year on campus have brought more than just May flowers, with drainage from the bluffs causing soils to swell. Some campus facilities experienced new cracks, flooding and water infiltration. Facilities Services quickly took action to make repairs and protect campus buildings from further damage.

The department reached out to the state for emergency controlled maintenance funding to conduct a structural assessment and were granted the opportunity and funds to bring in an engineering firm to comprehensively assess structural conditions and provide technical expertise on repairs to reduce the risk of future damage to campus infrastructure.

The study began assessing eight buildings with known water infiltration issues and revealed that two buildings met the state’s criteria for emergency repair to avoid more costly future repairs. Facilities promptly made an additional request for repair funding. The state approved $327,000 to make the necessary repairs, which will be underway soon.

“Our campus is very fortunate to have state support in expediting these repairs and protecting campus buildings from further damage,” said Mark Ferguson, Associate Vice Chancellor Campus Planning & Facilities Management.
