On Sept. 15, Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences (Johnson Beth-El) friends, alumni, students, staff and faculty gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the college joining the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS).
Johnson Beth-El has a long history and legacy of providing exceptional health and human performance education in the Colorado Springs community since its founding in 1904.
More than 100 guests were present to celebrate the milestone. Guests heard from Chancellor Venkat Reddy; Dean Kevin Laudner; Jo Ruth, retired Johnson Beth-El faculty and author of We are Beth-El Nurses; two-time Johnson Beth-El alumna and UCCS Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health and Wellness Stephanie Hanenberg; and Beth-El Student Nurse Association President and senior nursing student Chellis Richards.
“The Colorado Springs community and our alumni have always been strong supporters and partners in our work to meet the healthcare needs of southern Colorado and beyond,” said Dean Laudner. “This anniversary event was a wonderful opportunity for Johnson Beth-El alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members to reconnect and share their experiences.”
A Brief History of Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences
In 1904, the school was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church Woman’s Home Missionary Society as the Colorado Conference Deaconess Hospital and Training School.
The Hospital and school were renamed as the Beth-El Hospital and Training School in 1911.
In 1943, the city of Colorado Springs purchased Beth-El Hospital and was renamed Memorial Hospital.
In 1995, the college was renamed the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
In 1997, the community referendum merged the city-owned Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences with UCCS.
In 2004, the college celebrated its Centennial Year
In 2012, Residents of Colorado Springs vote to lease Memorial Hospital to University of Colorado Health, forming the UCHealth system.
In 2014, the Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences grand opening celebrates the growth and collaboration of the Colorado Springs health care community and the college clinics.
In 2015, The college was renamed the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences in recognition of endowment by Johnson family.
In 2020, the college opened the William J. Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center; expanding health sciences and human physiology programs.
Today, we celebrate the 25 years Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences has been a part of UCCS and its long legacy.
