Beginning December 2019, all UCCS employees will be able to enjoy an extended period with family and friends as UCCS implements a complete campus closure from Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019, through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020.
Feedback from a campus-wide survey of faculty and staff showed 83 percent of respondents supported or were indifferent to an extended closure. The UCCS Staff Association recommended a combination of administrative leave and vacation leave be used by employees to accomplish the winter closure. The new closure was originally announced in November 2018.
All 12-month faculty and staff should plan to have and use two personal vacation days to cover the gap in holidays on Dec. 26 and 27. The Governor’s Office has historically provided an additional day of administrative leave for all state employees, and if that occurs, employees will only be required to use one personal vacation day.
Previous holiday schedules had listed Monday, Dec. 23 as an administrative holiday instead of Monday, Dec. 30. The Cabinet approved the change to move the date to Dec. 30 to prevent campus from being open during the middle of the break and to provide an opportunity to complete end-of-semester work Dec. 23 before an extended break.
Employees should plan for the campus to be closed through the winter break from Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019 through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. Any special, unique or required work or campus activities during the closure will need to be identified, justified and approved in advance through their director, vice chancellor or dean.
