Demolition demonstrates progress on academic office building

Construction crews leveled a former private residence adjacent to Columbine Hall June 19 to make way for a new faculty office building.

The former ranch style home was previously used by the Colorado Institute for Technology Transfer and Implementation (now El Pomar Institute for Innovation and Commercialization) and the Small Business Development Center. This spring, the Small Business Development Center moved to El Paso County offices on Garden of the Gods.

In less than an hour, crews using heavy equipment leveled the structure and began sorting debris into bricks, steel, concrete and wood for recycling.

The demolition was part of the first phase of construction for the academic office building that will eventually occupy the site, according to Gary Reynolds, executive director, Facilities Services. Other details of the first phase include leveling the site and coordinating the location of utilities with the Austin Bluffs widening project. Parking lot six is partially closed.

Reynolds expects construction of a new, five-story office building to begin in August and continue until Aug. 2014. About 100 faculty offices and several conference rooms are planned as is a direct path to Columbine Hall. The building will be designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold-level standards.
