Summer enrollment increases 13 percent; hopes high for fall

UCCS summer enrollment increased by more than 400 students and 2,000 credit hours from a year ago, according to official census figures released June 18.

The Office of Institutional Research provided enrollment data following the June 18 official census date for summer semester enrollment. There were 3,582 students enrolled for the summer 2013 semester compared to 3,174 last year, a 408 student or 13 percent increase.

Students enrolled in 20,909 credit hours in summer 2013 compared to 18,717 last summer, a 2,192 hour or 12 percent increase.

Homer Wesley, vice chancellor, Student Success and Enrollment Management, said the enrollment increases were primarily in the categories of continuing UCCS students and students not seeking to complete degrees. He complimented faculty and staff on their efforts to offer a broad range of course choices.

Applications for fall semester remain strong, Wesley said. He encouraged faculty and staff to continue to support orientation sessions throughout the summer and to be vigilant in encouraging students to enroll. Of particular concern to Wesley are the estimated 15 students who had homes damaged or lost in the Black Forest Fire. Some UCCS students may have been affected by the Royal Gorge fire as well. Those students are at particular risk of not returning in the fall as they cope with financial and emotional stresses related to the fire.

“We will do everything possible to assist,” Wesley said.

Faculty and staff in contact with students affected by the Black Forest or Royal Gorge fires should encourage the student to contact the Office of the Dean of Students, 255-3838.
