An 18-month project to widen Austin Bluffs Parkway, including a portion directly in front of UCCS, will begin June 17.
UCCS faculty, staff and students will see signs announcing the project and construction crews working to locate utilities. The week of June 24, construction will begin in earnest as medians are removed from the stretch of Austin Bluffs Parkway between Mallow Road to east of Meadow Lane. This is roughly the area between Colorado Springs Christian School and the Union Boulevard overpass.
Throughout the fall, construction will continue on the north or UCCS side of Austin Bluffs before moving to the south or residential side of the street during the late fall and early months of 2014. Work will continue through Sept. 2014.
UCCS faculty, staff and students should anticipate delays and difficulty entering campus, Jim Spice, executive director, Parking and Transportation, said.
“Ultimately, the widening of Austin Bluffs Parkway will be a benefit,” Spice said. “But there will be difficult periods during the next several months. We plan to work closely with the contractor and the City of Colorado Springs to advise campus of peak construction times and to offer counsel about avoiding delays “
The $22.5 million project is funded by the Pikes Peak Regional Transportation Authority. Lawrence Construction, Littleton, was selected for the project. The company also completed the Union and Austin Bluffs Interchange in 2008.
Eventually, the widening project will continue east until Austin Bluffs is six lanes from Nevada Avenue to Old Farm Drive, part of a long-term east-west mobility improvement plan.
