The UCCS Men’s Golf Team earned a fourth-place finish in the 2013 NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional Championship May 8 and qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships May 20-24.
Kevin Witte, a senior communication major from Phoenix, and Spencer Biersdorff , a senior business major from Nevada City, Calif., shot scores of 72 to lead UCCS to a team score of 290 in the final round and a fourth-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Division II West / South Central Regional Championships at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.
The finish qualifies the Mountain Lions for the NCAA Division II National Championships May 20-24 at the Hershey Country Club,Hershey, Pa. It’s the first trip to the national championships for UCCS since the 2008-09 season.
The Mountain Lions posted a tournament score of 861 for the best tournament of the season and the best team score since March 2012. UCCS will be the only team from the RMAC and South Central Region to compete at the national championships.
Witte finished as the regional runner-up with a tournament score of 208. It’s the best tournament of his two-year Mountain Lion career and he finished with 12 birdies in the 54 holes. He finished two strokes off of the leader.
Biersdorff posted a 72 for the second straight day to finish second on the team with a tournament score of 218. He recorded a birdie on hole 10 for the second time in the tournament and finished the tournament tied for No. 31 among the 108 golfers.
The Mountain Lions will be one of 20 teams from throughout the country to compete at the national championships May 20-24. UCCS will be paired with Bellarmine University, Louisville, Ky., from the Midwest Region and Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Fla., from the South Region for a 10 a.m. May 20 tee off on the east course at the Hershey Country Club.
