GOCA1420 presents “Styrobot: nothing comes from nothing”

The UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art  will present an innovative and ambitious contemporary art project with artist Michael Salter, “Styrobot: nothing comes from nothing” in the campus gallery, GOCA1420 beginning Jan. 24.

The exhibit opens Thursday, Jan. 24 with a 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. reception. A talk by the artist will begin at 7 p.m. The exhibit will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday or by appointment through March 22. All events are free and open to the public.

Michael Salteris a self-proclaimed “obsessive observer,” sifting through the avalanche of mass media and corporate branding to find poignant, absurd, and baffling pieces which become part of his work. His work bridges disciplines from product and toy design, to kinetic sculpture, logotypes, animation, and signage. Salter is currently an associate professor of digital arts/new media at the University of Oregon where he directs the Digital Art Program in the Department of Art. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, including “Lithium Project” in Naples, Italy, the San Jose (Calif.) Museum of Art and Rice University Gallery in Houston among many others.  He received his BFA in graphic design and sculpture from Miami University in Ohio and MFA in studio art from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Salter will be in residence campus in late January and in advance of arriving has involved the local community in gathering the material needed for his unique and massive sculptural vision. GOCA has collected donations of Styrofoam/Styrene packaging to be used in the creation of this project, with the hopes of recycling this material at the closing of the exhibit.
