For three days, 40 students from Colorado Springs and surrounding area secondary schools will engage in a high-energy, interactive experience at UCCS to learn the fundamentals of electronics, solar technology, semiconductor manufacturing, microchip logic, automated process fundamentals and nanotechnology.

Oct. 16-18, the students will attend SEMI High Tech U, a three-day tech career exploration program for high school students presented by the SEMI Foundation and hosted at Atmel Corporation and UCCS. Sponsors include BioClean, Contec, Fab Owners Association, Fisher Scientific, High Vac Corp. and Ramtron Semiconductor. Classes will be taught by volunteers from Atmel, UCCS, and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
“We appreciate Atmel and the other corporate sponsors for making SEMI High Tech U possible,” R. “Dan” Dandapani, dean, College of Engineering and Applied Science, said. “Corporate sponsorships like this are critically important to filling the pipeline of potential new students for our nationally ranked engineering undergraduate and graduate programs.”
Students attending the program represent secondary schools including Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs Christian School, Common Ground Home Schools, Coronado, Harrison, Mitchell, Palmer, Pine Creek and St. Mary’s.
Events at UCCS are scheduled for Oct. 17 and include campus tours, tours of specific engineering laboratories and a Twister-like game where the students will simulate electron flow in a microprocessor.
During closing ceremonies Oct. 18 at Atmel offices on Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard, the students will receive graduation certificates nd one student will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Since its inception in 2001, SEMI High Tech U has been presented to 3,815 high school students and 774 teachers in the U.S., Austria, France, Japan, Korea, Singapore, The Netherlands, and The United Arab Emirates.
