On most college campuses, Sunday mornings during Homecoming week are reserved for sleeping. At UCCS, faculty, staff and students will kick off Homecoming week by picking up litter.
UCCS community members wearing orange safety vests and carrying trash bags will take to the streets at 9 a.m. on Sept. 30 to pick up litter on campus and in surrounding areas.
“This is a great opportunity for students, faculty and staff to give back to the local community,” Helen Lahrman, graduate assistant, Student Life and Leadership, said.
Participants will meet at the University Center before splitting into teams and heading out. The students will be instructed to work only in common areas such as streets, curbs and medians and will not go onto private property. The project is part of the university’s “Good Neighbors” campaign, which aims to strengthen UCCS relationships with surrounding communities.
Many other Homecoming events are scheduled throughout the week, including an ongoing social media contest where students, faculty and staff will search for a cardboard cutout of Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and take photos with it to post to the UCCS Facebook and Twitter accounts.
The Kraemer Family Library will host a panel discussion celebrating Intergeneration Month. The panel will feature former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm, former CU Regent and current UCCS Ambassador Sandy Kraemer, and Assistant Professor Corinne Harmon at 3 p.m. Oct. 4.
At 4 p.m. Oct. 5, hundreds of students in UCCS gear will show school spirit by walking en masse from Summit Village to Mountain Lion Stadium as part of “The March.” At 5 p.m., UCCS and Colorado Christian University will compete in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s soccer match with a special halftime performance, followed by the women’s game at 7:30 p.m.
Mike Larkin, senior instructor, Department of Geography of Environmental Studies, will give UCCS alumni and friends a glimpse into the famed UCCS "Wines and Vines" course and host a wine tasting at 5:30 Oct. 5 in the Upper Lodge. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased online at http://www.uccs.edu/alumni/alumni_events.html by Oct. 1.
Festivities will continue with “Alumni Homecoming Luncheon and Campus Tour: Firewall or Failure” at noon Oct. 6 in the UCCS Upper Lodge. Josh Dunn, associate professor, Department of Political Science, will discuss the upcoming election and how Colorado can play a key role in shaping the US political future. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased online at http://www.uccs.edu/alumni/alumni_events.html by Oct. 1.
Homecoming events also include a Homecoming formal at 8 p.m. Oct. 6 in Berger Hall. The event will include music, dancing, food and drink, a variety of casino games, and hundreds of dollars in prizes. Tickets are available at the UC information desk for $10 for singles and $15 for couples.
