Summer enrollment declines slightly; hopes high for fall

UCCS summer enrollment decreased slightly compared to a year ago, according to official census figures.

The Office of Institutional Research provided enrollment data following the June 18 official census date for summer semester enrollment. There were 3,174 students enrolled for the summer 2012 semester compared to 3,231 students last summer, a 57 student or 2.8 percent decrease. Students enrolled in 18,717 credit hours in summer 2012 compared to 18,733 last summer, a 16 credit hour or 0.1 percent decrease.

While overall numbers decreased slightly, there were significant increases in new freshman and transfer students compared to a year ago.

“New freshmen are up by 60 percent and new transfers are up by 17 percent this summer,” Homer Wesley, vice chancellor, Student Success and Enrollment Management, said.

According to Wesley, increases in freshmen and transfers this summer are likely to continue for the fall. Overall enrollment is expected to increase from last fall’s 9,321 students.
