Faculty approve non-tenure track committee bylaws

The UCCS Faculty Assembly voted to approve bylaws for the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Committee in a brief Nov. 11 meeting.

"The purpose of this committee shall be to represent the non-tenure track faculty as a standing committee at the Faculty Representative Assembly meetings. The committee shall also address NTTF concerns on campus and lead various NTTF initiatives," reads Article II of the approved bylaws document.

The NTTF committee is one of four regular standing Faculty Assembly committees but committee members discovered that official committee bylaws were lost in past years. Updated replacement bylaws were composed and the committee adopted them in early October before submitting them to the assembly for approval.

After making an amendment to include a library representative on the committee and an amendment clarifying how committee vacancies are to be filled, the assembly voted overwhelmingly to approve the bylaws.

Other meeting highlights include a report from Tom Napierkowski, professor, English, on his meeting with the CU system-wide Faculty Council's committee on Privilege and Tenure. He noted the Privilege and Tenure committee at UCCS is very successful and serves the university well. Few grievances are filed and conflicting situations are commonly resolved without resorting to arbitration.

Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak reported to faculty that an official announcement was forthcoming later in the day about the $4 million gift to the campus establishing the Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences (see https://communique.uccs.edu/?p=5280). She also reported that higher education's allocation from the state budget will be cut and the cuts include the loss of $1.5 million in student financial aid. She said loss of the financial aid will be coming about next May and the university will need to backfill that funding. She said the strategic planning initiative is now at the sub-committee level, and faculty should continue providing input.

Peg Bacon, provost, and David Moon, senior associate vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, announced a faculty retreat addressing the general education initiative is scheduled for 8:30 a.m to 1 p.m. Nov. 18. The General Education Task Force will present preliminary ideas regarding general education goals and curriculum.
