Mountain Lion homecoming weekend 2011 includes soccer, improvisational comedy, and Disney magic.
The annual UCCS “Back to the Bluffs” celebration also repeats favorites such as a family hike, a casino night, and the opportunity for moms and daughters to grow closer punching and kicking a UCCS police officer.
“Back to the Bluffs” kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 12, with “The March.” Hundreds of students in their UCCS gear show school spirit by walking en masse from Summit Village to the 4 Diamonds soccer field. At 5 p.m., UCCS and CSU-Pueblo compete in the traditional Silver and Steel rivalry in women’s soccer with men’s soccer scheduled at 7:30 p.m. A homecoming bonfire follows at 9 p.m. with music, food and drinks.
Oct. 14 brings on the Family, Friends and Alumni Weekend. Guests may register and pick up information throughout the day at the University Center Information Desk. The day’s events include a campus tour at 1 p.m., UCCS vs. Colorado College men’s soccer at 4 p.m. at 4 Diamonds, and UCCS vs. Adams State College women’s volleyball at 7 p.m. in the Gallogly Events Center.
A Back to the Bluffs reception takes place at Clyde’s at 7 p.m., and the Bovine Improv and Comedy Troupe performs an interactive, family-friendly show at 8 p.m. in Berger Hall. The Bovine Metropolis Theater in Denver has a reputation for making improvisation a popular form of entertainment and a corporate training tool with personnel who teach as well as perform.
A two to three hour fall color hike begins morning festivities at 8 a.m. Oct. 15 starting from the UCCS Recreation Center. A guide will take hikers on a tour exploring the beauty of seasonal changes in the campus bluffs. At 10 a.m. in the Kraemer Family Library third floor apse, Hollywood veteran Bob Garner presents “The Magic Behind Disney: Connecting The Dots.” Garner shares his experience of over 30 years as a writer, producer and director working for CBS, The Walt Disney Studios/Imagineering, and others. He presents short film clips and interviews from the various projects he produced and directed through the years, drawing from Walt Disney’s personal and professional philosophies on how to use relationships, confidence, and the right attitude to achieve goals. Through his presentations, Garner has inspired people of all ages to bring their passions to their career pursuits.
Steve Linhart, director, Emergency Management and Judicial Affairs, will host an afternoon of quality mother-daughter time from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 in UC 303 by demonstrating self-defense techniques. He will discuss basic awareness and teach principles of self-defense with hands-on drills and practical exercises. He said the brief presentation is no substitute for the 12 hour Rape Aggression Defense class but will include valuable tips on self-protection and defense. “A Night in Vegas – Homecoming Formal and Casino Night” is at 8 p.m. Oct. 15 in Berger Hall with music, dancing, food and drink, a variety of casino games, and hundreds of dollars in prizes. Passes, available at the UC information desk, are $10 for singles and $15 for couples.
“Back to the Bluffs” winds down Oct. 16, with Family Day on the west lawn from 12-4 p.m. Activities and games, hosted by various UCCS departments, include pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, pictures with Boomer and inflatable attractions.
