The “All Campus Read” is a UCCS project intended to create community and promote discussion through a contemporary topic crossing school and college boundaries, and welcoming all students, faculty and staff.
The annual effort includes a series of extracurricular activities and will be part of many first-year student programs. “No Impact Man” by Colin Beavan was chosen as the “All Campus Read” selection. The book about a family’s effort to reduce consumption and be more ecologically responsible reflects the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences 2011-12 academic year theme “Sustainability and Community,” Peg Bacon, provost, announced last spring.
She noted the “All Campus Read” selection is made with great consideration. The campus sustainability committee members read and reviewed numerous books to arrive at a suitable choice. The selection in spring allows faculty, staff and campus administrators time to read the book and prepare events relating to it for the fall semester.
In keeping with the theme, this year’s convocation address refers to the book. The presentation by Tom Huber, professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, is entitled “You Can’t Do Just One Thing,” and speaks to the subsequent effects of one person’s choices and actions.
