Governor John Hickenlooper is expected to sign two bills into law Tuesday afternoon at UCCS.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Hickenlooper is expected to sign House Bill 1301 regarding higher education efficiency and Senate Bill 260, the Allen Rose tow truck safety act, in brief ceremonies located in parking lot four in the center of campus. The event is open to the campus community.

On Friday, Hickenlooper is expected to sign into law Senate Bill 204 which ads research to the UCCS statutory mission and also allows CSU-Pueblo to offer a doctorate in nursing practice degree.  Provost Peg Bacon will attend Friday’s ceremony at CSU-Pueblo.

HB 1301, which surfaced late in the session with the backing of CU, gives state college and universities additional management flexibility in a variety of areas, including setting and handling of student fees, creating non-profit auxiliaries, hiring, purchasing, employee benefits, technology management and construction.

SB 260 calls for increased safety procedures and warning signs and is designed to protect tow operators. The bill is named in honor of Colorado Springs resident Allen Rose who died in a February towing accident.

“I am honored that Governor Hickenlooper will be on our campus,” Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. “I hope those on campus interested in  the legislative process will join in the ceremonies and celebrate the passage of these important changes for UCCS.”

Also on Tuesday, Hickenlooper is expected to sign  HB 1032 concerning restorative justice. Those ceremonies are planned for 4:30 p.m. at the Pioneers Museum. The family members of former UCCS student-athlete David Mueller were proponents of the bill. Mueller was killed in a July 2009 alcohol-related car accident.
