UCCS to celebrate Cuban diasporic artists

Cuba Transnational event poster“Cuba Transnational,” a project conceived and coordinated by Andrea Herrera, professor, Department of Women’s and Ethnic Studies, will highlight creativity in the Cuban diaspora.

The first series of events are five art exhibitions including a photography installation at Kraemer Family Library and four public multimedia art exhibits opening May 28 at Pueblo’s Sangre de Cristo Arts Center. All of the exhibitions feature multigenerational groups of Cuban diasporic artists who seek to preserve the nation’s artistic and cultural identity through their work.

Herrera serves as a curator for the art exhibitions.She recently published a book on Cuban diasporic art “Cuban Artists Across the Diaspora: Setting the Tent Against the House.” The publisher is University of Texas press.

A host of other events are planned including several poetry readings, musical and theatrical performances, including the off-Broadway play “Rum and Coke,” symposia, and lectures. Herrera and Maura Rainey, instructor, Department of Languages and Cultures, will also teach a course “The Cuban Diasporic Experience” this fall. The class is offered as an open learning community.
