In support of student scholarships, community members have pledged $130,000 in Giving Tuesday challenge gifts in addition to faculty, staff, parent, alumni and student donations Nov. 27.
The gifts will be unlocked by a variety of social media challenges and given numbers of donations of any amount. Challenges will show up on the social media aggregator on the Giving Tuesday UCCS website day-of.
Challenge money includes:
- $50,000 from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Rocky Mountain Chapter
- $20,000 from All Colorado Beer Festival
- $50,000 from Jane Dillon
- $10,000 from Clancy Herbst
The first 500 donors to contribute $15 or more will receive a complimentary pair of UCCS Mountain Lion socks. The design choice was the top pick on a social media poll earlier this year. A free breakfast for faculty and staff kicks off the day of giving from 7:30 – 9 a.m. in Clyde’s.
Since #GivingTuesdayUCCS started in 2015, more than $238,000 has been raised for student scholarships across campus.
“Thanks to scholarships, I’m able to take the time to give back to my university and community without making substantial sacrifices in my personal life – like eating and a roof over my head,” said Sierra Brown, English student, class of 2019.
This year falls on the anniversary of the death of UCCS police officer Garrett Swasey. Swasey died Nov. 27, 2015 when responding to a shooting at a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs. A scholarship in his name was created the year following his death and continues to be funded by Giving Tuesday.
Gifts will be accepted in person by cash, check or credit card from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Nov. 27 outside of Berger Hall or online anytime. Faculty and staff can also use payroll deduction to contribute to one of 15 scholarship funds including the Garrett Swasey, athletics, and Karen Possehl Women’s Endowment (KPWE) Scholarship. Donors can also indicate a specific use for their donation.
Clyde the mascot will make an appearance from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Nov. 27 outside of Berger Hall for polaroid camera photos with those who give. Socks will be mailed to those who make donations off-campus.
