Chancellor Statement: Condolences to family, friends of Zach Schlagel

Oct. 30, 2017

To the Campus Community:

I am writing as a follow up to my message about the tragic hit-and-run that occurred early Sunday morning at the intersection of Austin Bluffs Parkway and Stanton Road.

I now am able to share that the student who died was Zachary Schlagel, a freshman from the town of Severance in northern Colorado.

Zach lived in campus housing and was a pre-engineering student who arrived on campus in August. He was a 2017 graduate of Poudre High School.

Please join me in expressing our sincerest condolences to Zach’s family, friends and classmates.

University officials are working closely to support Zach’s family, his roommates and others. Counseling services are available to anyone who wishes them by calling 255-4444.

Additionally, the campus is working with the Colorado Springs Police Department in its investigation of this hit-and-run.

We are committed to the safety of our students. Please know that UCCS works closely with the City of Colorado Springs. We will request the City’s Traffic Engineering Division to review the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians on Austin Bluffs Parkway.

Respectfully,

Venkat Reddy, Chancellor
