Winter is coming, are you ready?

New Service Vehicles 009With snow and cold in this week’s forecast, students, staff and faculty are encouraged to make sure they’re ready for travel and signed up for campus notifications about closures and other weather information.

UCCSAlerts is the official system that notifies students, faculty and staff of campus emergencies, closures and other incidents.

There are several ways to get information during bad weather or an emergency:

  • On your mobile device: Receive text and/or email alerts in the event of a campus emergency or closure. Get more information and sign up for alerts at alerts.uccs.edu.
  • By email: Check your official university email after an emergency for support and resource information
  • On the web: Visit alerts.uccs.edu or www.uccs.edu for detailed closure and emergency information, as well as timely and updated public safety information
  • On the phone: Call the campus closures line at 719-255-3346 for recorded information and updates related to campus closures
  • On social media: Like UCCS Emergency ManagementUCCS Police, and UCCS on Facebook, and follow @UCCS@UCCS_Prepared, and @UCCSPolice on Twitter

“When it comes to being notified of a campus closure or delay due to winter weather, UCCSAlerts is the most effective and efficient means of receiving this information,” said Tim Stoecklein, emergency manager, Department of Public Safety. “We encourage everyone to take a moment to confirm their registration information is current, particularly their mobile device number to receive text alerts.”

In the event of extreme weather conditions, university officials strive to make closure decisions no later than 6 a.m. for morning and afternoon classes, or 3 p.m. for evening courses and activities. The Department of Public Safety encourages faculty, staff and students to use their best judgment about traveling to campus safely.

The City of Colorado Springs traffic cameras (http://www.springstraffic.info/CMAC_RSV/WebRSV.dll) provide real-time travel conditions, including those close to campus.

The Department of Public Safety encourages updating your car kit, checking your windshield washer fluid and staying up to date with the latest forecast information before heading out into winter driving conditions.
