UCCS nominated for 2016 Green Ribbon Award

The Colorado Department of Education recently selected UCCS to represent Colorado in the 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Awards competition.

UCCS was chosen based on an extensive submission and review in the fall, as well as a site visit from CDE reviewers in January, according to Linda Kogan, director, Office of Sustainability.

The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools programs seeks to inspire schools, districts and institutions of higher education by highlighting practices and resources that reduce environmental impact and costs, improve the health and wellness of schools, students and staff and provide environmental education in multiple disciplines.

Preparation for the submission was comprehensive, Kogan said, and included departments that included the Student Health and Wellness Center, Dining and Food Services, and the UCCS Farm and Greenhouse.

“It was impressive to learn about all of the activities and progress occurring throughout the university, included in this award, which contributes to greater health, safety, and sustainability,” Kogan said.

The Education Department will announce honorees April 22, Earthday. If selected, UCCS representatives will be invited to Washington D.C. to receive  the award.
