The Sherpa Trail, a popular hiking trail that also connects Alpine Valley Student Housing with central campus, closed at noon Aug. 17 because of safety concerns.
Tamara Moore, executive director, Auxiliary Services, made the announcement after consulting with the UCCS Recreation Department, UCCS Police and risk managers.
“Our unexpectedly heavy summer rains have washed out portions of the trail,” Moore said. “We are unsure of its stability and had no choice but to close it pending further investigation.”
Facilities Services staff members will be placing signs at the trail’s entrance and orange plastic construction fencing across the entrance to warn of the trail’s closure. The trail will be evaluated over the next several weeks and repairs considered as part of an overall trails master plan, Moore said.
Students are being encouraged to use new, wider sidewalks – an extension of the campus pedestrian spine – to walk from Alpine Valley to the Campus Recreation Center and to classes on central campus. The extension was completed last week and will eventually connect to the Ent Center for the Arts building on North Nevada.
Colorado Springs experienced record rainfall throughout the spring and summer months as well as widespread flooding.
