Kelli Klebe, associate vice chancellor for research and faculty development, Academic Affairs, and Mary Coussons-Read, executive vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, will lead a faculty retreat Feb. 5 to discuss how UCCS can support faculty who engage undergraduate students in creative works and research.

The retreat is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in University Center 116 and is one of several conversations planned for the semester. Both Faculty Assembly and the Undergraduate Research Steering Committee assisted in the development of the program which includes discussion of faculty experiences with involving undergraduate students in scholarship as well as examples from other colleges and universities.

“Faculty regularly engage undergraduate students in scholarship in a variety of ways,” Klebe said. “That work could be working in a studio or lab, presenting an art show or play, a paper at a professional conference, conducting a capstone with a community partner … the possibilities are vast. How can we better support faculty in these endeavors? And should we expand these activities?”

Klebe emphasized that the retreat is designed to allow faculty to come and go as needed and that a variety of opinions are sought.

“We need all voices represented,” Klebe said. “Please consider attending and sharing your opinion.”

At a November Chancellor’s All-Campus Forum, Klebe and Coussons-Read discussed the concept of intensifying undergraduate experiences in creative works and research activities.

“Something that connects all of us is teaching,” Coussons-Read said. “There is a connection between teaching, research and the student experience. That’s non-funded research, too.

“It’s transformational for faculty and students.”
