Amid a backdrop of quickly melting snow, more than 250 faculty and staff posed for pictures and celebrated the 50th anniversary of UCCS Jan. 22.
A celebration in Berger Hall was preceded by an outdoor group photo that mimicked a 1990 photo taken to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Inside, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak offered remarks on the changes the university has seen and will likely see in the future.
From now until next fall, a series of events are planned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. Each month, colleges will highlight their activities and connections with the greater Colorado Springs community. A special website, http://www.uccs.edu/50th, will provide details of celebrations and events throughout the year.
Also on Thursday, Shockley-Zalabak recognized nine faculty members for their more than 40 years of service to the campus. Known as the legacy builders, Shockley-Zalabak hopes to make such recognitions an annual event.
“Collectively and individually, these members of our campus community have done so much,” Shockley-Zalabak said. “As we prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the campus, it is important that we recognize those whose efforts give us reason to celebrate.”

- Kenneth Pellow, professor, Department of English , 46 years.
