UCCS to celebrate Geography Awareness Week with GeoQuiz Night

Dynamic lead STACKED_no dateThe UCCS-based Colorado Geographic Alliance will celebrate Geography Awareness Week Nov. 16-22 by focusing on the future of sustainable food.

GeoQuiz Night. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at Clyde’s, there will be a geography trivia contest with prizes awarded to winners. The event is intended for UCCS students, faculty and staff interested in learning more about intersections between geography and other social science disciplines. Children of campus community members are also welcome to attend with their parents as are interested amateur or professional geographers. The event is sponsored by the Colorado Geographic Alliance, the GeoClub, the Office of the Provost, the Global Intercultural Research Center, Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability, and the Healthy Campus Initiative.

Established by Presidential proclamation in 1987, Geography Awareness Week is an annual public awareness program organized by National Geographic Education Programs. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Geography and The Future of Food.” The municipalities of Colorado Springs, Boulder and Denver have declared Nov. 16-22 as Geography Awareness Week.

Since 2008, Steve Jennings, associate professor, Geography and Environmental Studies Department,  and Rebecca Theobald, assistant professor adjoint, Geography and Environmental Studies Department, have coordinated the Colorado Geographic Alliance. As part of a national network of geographic alliances, COGA works to reinvigorate geography education in Colorado and to share ideas about infusing geography into K-12 curriculum.
