Two UCCS basketball players are receiving preseason attention after a strong 2013-14 season.
UCCS junior guard Derrick White was recently awarded with an All-America selection to the Division II Basketball Times Preseason Team. The publication also ranked the UCCS Men’s Basketball Team 18 in the Division II Preseason Top 20 Poll.
This is White’s third preseason award after being being named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year by the conference coaches, as well as being named a Super 16 selection by the Division II Bulletin as one of two representatives from the South Central Region.
White led the South Central Region last season with 22.2 points per game and led Division II with a program-record 251 free throws. White begins this season 161 points away from tying the UCCS career scoring record and already has the UCCS record for career free throws made with 415.
UCCS Men’s Basketball is coming off its first NCAA tournament appearance in program history and was picked to finish second in the RMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
White is not alone in bring in the honors.
UCCS senior guard Abby Kirchoff was named as the RMAC Preseason Player of the Year while the UCCS Women’s Basketball Team earned three first-place votes and came in third in the 2014-15 RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Kirchoff broke the UCCS season records with 564 total points and 20.9 points per game and surpassed 1,000 career points in 2013-14. She is third in UCCS career scoring records with 1,318 points and was an All-RMAC First Team and Daktronics All-South Central Region Second Team selection last season.
The UCCS basketball season kicks off on Nov. 14 with the women’s team traveling to Golden to play Lubbock Christian University at 4 p.m. and the men’s team taking on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in Denver.
