National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) is a nationwide initiative dedicated to promoting safe drinking habits and increasing awareness of alcohol’s impact on college campuses. This year, NCAAW falls on Oct. 21-25. For the second year in a row, the Office of the Dean of Students, in collaboration with Wellness Promotion, hosted an event to mark the occasion.
“BAC 1010: Being Alcohol Conscious”, was held on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Upper Plaza. At this interactive event, students learned about how alcohol impacts the body and discovered tips for safe drinking habits. The event also included giveaways of bucket hats, hammocks, tote bags and more.
UCCS students make safe, smart and responsible decisions about alcohol. According to the most recent National Collegiate Health Assessment conducted at UCCS in spring 2023:
- 88% of students drink in moderation when consuming alcohol
- 85% of students don’t binge drink
- 2,000+ UCCS students choose not to drink
The Office of the Dean of Students encourages students to continue these healthy behaviors by applying harm reduction strategies. Harm reduction focuses on minimizing the negative consequences associated with alcohol and drug use by providing practical, nonjudgmental and evidence-based information. This approach empowers individuals to make safer choices and reduce potential harm to themselves and others.
