Stanton Road to close; traffic to be rerouted

map from facilitiesConstruction on the Alpine Garage, a traffic roundabout, and the expansion of Alpine Village will require pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists to change routes until mid-August, according to the Department of Facilities Services.

“We apologize in advance for the inconvenience,” Charles Cummings, project manager, Facilities Services said. “But this is a heavy construction zone and keeping everyone safe is our priority. We are encouraging students, faculty and staff to stay clear of this area for the remainder of the summer, if at all possible.”

Beginning July 7, those walking from campus to Alpine Village should use an access road at the north end of Parking Lot 8. To reach Alpine Garage and or Austin Bluffs Parkway, pedestrians should use a temporary crosswalk from Mountain Lion Way and cross Stanton Road diagonally.

Beginning July 14, pedestrians walking along Parking Lot 8 at the Recreation Center will encounter Colorado Springs Utilities working on the power pole adjacent to the sidewalk in preparation for removal of overhead power lines. CSU will block an area in the parking lot and have a flagger directing pedestrian traffic on the sidewalk. The poles and wires will remain for a week but will be completely removed by July 25. The wires are not powered.

Motorists will encounter a temporary four-way stop at the intersection of Stanton Road and Mountain Lion Way. Additionally, Stanton Road is closed north of the entry to Alpine Village Drive to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic, including bicycles. Those trying to reach Four Diamonds from main campus are encouraged to use Austin Bluffs Parkway and its sidewalks to reach North Nevada Ave. The project to expand Austin Bluffs Parkway will continue through October 2014. The sidewalk to North Nevada Avenue is currently available.

On Aug. 16, construction crews will open the new roundabout as well as a widened sidewalk connecting the campus to Alpine Village. Stanton Road will also reopen to traffic at that time. On Aug. 18, the new 1,234-space Alpine Garage is expected to open with intramural activities beginning on its top floor playing field by Aug. 25. Beginning in the fall term, all students living on campus and all visitors to the Recreation Center will need to park in the Alpine Garage. Parking Lot 8 will close as construction begins on an expansion of the Recreation Center.
