Two UCCS students awarded a trip to Japan

Consul Furutani from the Japan Consulate Office in Denver visited UCCS on Dec. 7.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan awarded two UCCS students in the Japanese program, Gunnar Anderson and Frederick Frillman a one-week trip to Japan. The Consulate-General of Japan in Denver decided to recommend the students to be part of the Kakehashi Project, which promotes people-to-people exchange between Japan and the U.S.

Our students earned their spot due to their tremendous success at the Colorado Speech Contest last March, winning first place in three categories and second place in one category out of five total categories.

Anderson and Frillman are part of a group of 16 college students in the U.S. who were awarded the trip. They will visit Tokyo and learn about the diet, metropolitan government offices, the imperial palace, high-tech technology and traditional industries, famous sightseeing spots outside of Tokyo, and local schools. The trip includes some traditional cultural activities as well, including tea ceremonies, making sushi, Japanese drums and dance. They will be assigned a host family during part of the trip.

Consul Furutani and Ms. Show from the Denver Consulate Japan office visited UCCS on Dec. 7 to congratulate Anderson, Frillman and Japanese senior instructor Mioko Webster.
