The Heller Center for Arts & Humanities participated in the Museum Assessment Program March 5-6.
Through guided self-study and on-site consultation with Nathan Kemler, collections manager, Grand Valley (Mich.) State University, the Heller Center will now develop steps to reach the highest professional standards in the museum field.
The Museum Assessment Program is funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the American Association of Museums. The program’s goal is to advance best practices and foster museum improvement.
“Working with Nathan has been a wonderful experience for all of us at the Heller Center, including our student interns and volunteers,” Perrin Cunningham, curator, Heller Center, said. “He will be recommending specific steps we can take to improve our stewardship of the amazing Heller collection.”
Cunningham said her goals for participating assessment were to increase staff knowledge of collection care best practices, to develop collection management and conservation plans, and to prioritize long-term collections management issues.
