UCCS to host season’s first home softball series

softballIt may still feel like winter but spring sports are underway. The UCCS Mountain Lion women’s softball team will host its first home games Feb. 28 and March 1 against the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University.

The Mountain Lions have compiled a 3-3 record and the Mavericks are 2-8.

The Mavericks were projected to finish first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference according to the 2014 RMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Last weekend, Colorado Mesa lost three-of-four games against Metro State and was outscored 40-23 over the four game series.

UCCS won its only game last weekend as the Mountain Lions defeated Colorado Mines 6-5. Leading the way for UCCS in that game was Jessica Belsterling, who recorded three RBIs, scored two runs, and struck out Orediggers from the mound. She is one of three Mountain Lion pitchers with a record of 1-1.

Korey Kulpins boasts the team’s best era on UCCS squad to this juncture of the season (3.82), while Stephanie Chitowski leads the team in total strikeouts (18). Three Mountain Lions currently have a batting average above .300: Jen Schellenberg (.368), Emily Jennings (.333), and Becca Needler (.313).  Freshmen Sami Meyer and Nikki Hoffman have one homerun each to lead the team in that category.

The series begins with a double header at 11 a.m. Feb. 28, followed by another double header on March 1, also beginning at 11 a.m., at the Four Diamonds Sports Complex.
