The UCCS Beth-El Student Nursing Association delivered 208 teddy bears to the patients at the Children’s Hospital Colorado in Memorial Hospital Feb. 12.
The bears were built Feb. 10 at the Build-A-Bear Workshop in the Chapel Hills Mall. More than 75 volunteers assisted the BSNA members in building the costumed bears. According to Sue Davis, senior instructor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, one of the volunteers was 3-year- old boy who originally came to the mall to build his own bear but instead donated his finished product to the hospital.
“He told us he wanted his Sponge Bob to go to a little girl that was really sick,” Davis said.
Because of hospital regulations, the Student Nurses Association members were not allowed to deliver the bears directly to patients. Instead, hospital staff and volunteers will share them with patients, some in pediatric intensive care, over the next several days.
