A sprinkling of snow didn’t scare away more than 50 racers and 25 volunteers from bringing the annual Bash the Bluffs 5k back to the UCCS campus Saturday, April 17.

“I am especially grateful that we have been able to come together to celebrate Dr. Ed Burke, the former professor of Exercise Science and renowned researcher at UCCS,” Cynthia Lewis, fitness coordinator and Bash the Bluffs coordinator, said in opening remarks ahead of the race. “Burke served as a friend and mentor to many at Campus Recreation and around the UCCS campus. We also want to mention his widow Kathleen Rand-Burke, who unfortunately couldn’t make it today, but she sends her regards.”

Every spring Campus Recreation hosts the on-campus 5k in honor of Ed Burke, former professor of exercise science and renowned researcher at UCCS. In 2020, the race was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 5k benefits the Ed Burke Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, which provides merit-based scholarships for students studying exercise science at UCCS.

First and second place runners received a certificate, Chick-Fil-A rewards box and Honey Stinger Goodr sunglasses. Third place runners received a certificate and pair of sunglasses.
