Blood drive exceeds goal

A three-day Halloween blood drive at UCCS netted 164 pints of blood, enough to potentially save the lives of 500 people, according to representatives of Bonfils Blood Center.

Solitaire Merrill, community donor representative, Bonfils Blood Center, said 178 members of the UCCS community visited the University Center-based blood drive Oct. 30-Nov.1 with the goal of donating blood. Of those, 14 were deferred because of illness or other issues.

“We collected 164 units of blood,” Merrill said. “Our goal was 163 so this was perfect!”

Merrill complimented the campus effort and, specifically, four students who volunteered to help promote future drives. UCCS and Bonfils are planning a Feb. 17 and 18, 2014 drive.

To assist with the February drive, contact organizers Ida Dilwood, director, Office of Disability Services, 255-3653, or Mathew Roesemann, budget analyst, Resource Management Division, 255-3389.
