For many, retirement means settling down and enjoying a quiet life. That was not the case for retired Colorado Springs Police Chief Richard Myers who was appointed the interim police chief for Sanford, Fla. following the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Myers will discuss his experience heading the Sanford Police Department during the shooting's fallout at 3 p.m. Nov. 6 in the University Center Theater, Room 302. He will focus on how the police department, media and community responded to the event, as well as the community outreach efforts he witnessed during his time in Sanford.
A panel addressing community outreach effort will follow Myers' presentation.
Prior to his appointment in Sanford, Myers served as police chief for the Colorado Springs Police Department from 2007 until Oct. 2011. After he retired from CSPD, Myers acted as interim chief for the Manitou Springs Police Department.
Myers was asked to serve Sanford after Chief Bill Lee Jr. received a no confidence vote from the city commission for his handling of the Martin investigation. Myers served as interim chief for 11 months until Cecil Smith was sworn in as Sanford's permanent chief in April 2013.
The event is free and open to the public, however, seating is limited.
