Six words inspire new students to succeed

If faculty or staff members could give just six words of advice to a new freshman, what would they be?

That’s the question that Jennifer Hane, director, Alumni Relations, set out to answer last spring in an engagement campaign called Six Word Memoirs.

UCCS faculty, staff and alumni were invited to participate in the project.

“Within the first day we launched the campaign, we received well over 100 submissions from graduates across the country,” Hane said. “Alumni were thrilled at the chance to share their advice with incoming students and even began using a #sixwords hash tag on social media. We were overwhelmed by the response.”

After compiling the submissions and pairing them with photos of students, faculty and alumni, Hane compiled the images into a video that was shown Aug. 21 as part of Convocation activities.

“Seeing the students reaction to the material was more than worth the effort,” Hane recalls. “Linking students to alumni  – and both groups to the institution – will have an impact that lasts generations.”
