Margaret Doell, a former American Council on Education fellow at UCCS, was recently promoted to assistant vice president for academic affairs at Adams State University, Alamosa.
Doell completed her ACE fellowship at UCCS during the 2012 academic year before returning to a faculty position at Adams State.
As assistant vice president, Doell will serve half-time in that position while continuing as chair of the Art Department. As assistant vice president, Doell will oversee budgets for adjunct faculty and summer school and will work closely with department chairs. Her promotion was announced by David Svaldi, president, Adams State University.
“The year as an ACE Fellow highlighted for me the extensive challenges facing higher education, especially in regards to the long-term fiscal viability of small institutions like ASU,” Doell said. “The opportunity to observe Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak for a year at UCCS also stressed the importance of effective communication to a wide variety of stakeholders, both on and off campus. I hope to model as best I can her example of relationship building, communication, and planning.”
Doell’s fellowship year involved extensive campus observations of the leadership team at UCCS, four ACE retreats emphasizing issues in higher education and campus visits to institutions across the country. While at UCCS, Doell researched funding models for public partnerships and joint ventures involving a new visual and performing arts center. She also provided to ASU leadership an overview of shared governance practices nationally, a summary of results of a survey of ASU faculty and a series of recommendations for ASU leadership.
