Chancellor Memo re: Colorado floods

To the Campus Community:

While UCCS has remained relatively undamaged by rains and flooding of the past week, our sister campus in Boulder has not been so lucky. Today, after two days of closure and the cancellation of Saturday’s football game, the Boulder campus reopened for business.

But the campus will be recovering for weeks and months to come.

We have offered – and will continue to offer – assistance to our sister campus during the recovery phase of this disaster. In the days and weeks ahead, Boulder campus officials will be able to assess damage to library and classroom buildings. As a campus, we must be ready to assist in this recovery in whatever way we can.

We also know many faculty and staff members are personally affected by these disasters, having lost homes and possessions in the flooding. Students are affected, too, as many off-campus residences suffered damage. In other cases, the losses are one step removed as friends or relatives face the daunting task of clean up or rebuilding.

I ask that you reach out to your professional counterpart at the Boulder campus and offer both your assistance and your personal support.

Additionally, if you are directly – or indirectly – affected by the flooding of the last few days, I encourage you to tell your supervisor so that we can provide whatever assistance we can.

The flooding’s effect on the larger University of Colorado community will disrupt workloads for weeks to come. Your kindness, compassion, and support for each other during this time, will sustain us.

The forecast is for sunshine tomorrow. We will celebrate while remembering that members of our university community are still dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.
