Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach presented a Spirit of the Springs Award to members of the national champion UCCS Inline Hockey team Friday morning during a brief ceremony at the Campus Recreation Center.
Bach presented the award to Leland Scott, vice president of the club team, and Bill Mulhern, the team’s coach as other team members, recreation center staff and campus administrators watched. Mulhern gave the mayor a team jersey bearing his name.
In brief remarks, Bach quipped that UCCS didn’t even have paved parking lots when he was a student, let alone a recreation center and championship-level teams. Bach is a 1968 UCCS graduate.
The 15-member Inline Hockey Club won a national championship April 14 at the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association Tournament in Fort Meyers, Fla. For more information about the team and its path, visit https://communique.uccs.edu/?p=10484.
Spirit of the Springs celebration awards are given by the mayor to recognize citizens when a volunteer activity or noteworthy achievement has brought great honor and pride to the City of Colorado Springs or has been distinguished at a state, national, or international level.
