Men interested in stopping rape, sexual assault, and gender violence are being encouraged by a campus-based organization to don women’s shoes and raise money for TESSA, a local agency that supports victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 27 in Bancroft Park in Old Colorado City. Registration began March 1 and will continue until the day of the event, according to Carrie Baatz, educational and outreach specialist, Respect on Campus, and event organizer.
“We have all heard the saying, ‘You never truly know someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes,’’’ Baatz said. “Here’s your chance.”
To register, visit http://www.walkamilecs.eventbrite.com or the University Center Information Desk (make checks out to the UCCS Student Group “SAVE”). The registration fee is $15 and includes a t-shirt. Participants are asked to provide their own high heels. For information about locating stores with extended sizes, email [email protected]. A list of vendors is also available at the UC Information Desk.
In Colorado, almost half of all women and 25 percent of men have experienced a sexually violent crime in their lifetime, according to the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey.
This event is hosted by the UCCS Respect on Campus program with support from TESSA’s Auxiliary Board. The ROC program received support from the Graduate School, School of Public Affairs, College of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Kramer Family Library. Event proceeds will benefit TESSA.
