The Bash the Bluffs 5K returns for the 18th year April 27 in partnership with UCCS Army ROTC and Team Red, White and Blue.

Registration is open at http://bit.ly/bashthebluffs and is $20 for students and recreation center members, $25 for UCCS employees and alumni, and $30 for the general public. Registration goes up $5 on race day. Last year, 135 runners completed the race and raised more than $2,000 for the Ed Burke Memorial Scholarship.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m. April 27. The course is mildly challenging for runners, who go from the recreation center to University Hall and back. It is stroller and dog friendly.

Early packet pick up for runners is April 26 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., and from 4-6 p.m. at the front desk of the Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center. Parking is available in 15-minute spots immediately next to the recreation center in visitor parking in Alpine Garage for $2 per hour, and free on race day. All participants receive a t-shirt, drawstring backpack and race goodies. The winning male and female running receive Nike Running beanies, heating pads and gift certificates.

The Burke Memorial Endowment Fund provides merit-based scholarships for students studying exercise science at UCCS. It’s named in memory of Ed Burke, an associate professor who died in 2002 from a heart attack while riding his mountain bike.

“Dr. Burke served as a friend and mentor to many in campus recreation and had a great influence on the university and athletic community,” said Brooke Freudenhammer, program coordinator in campus recreation. “We love getting the community involved and bringing them to our beautiful campus for such a great cause.”
