A legendary athletic philanthropist, an RMAC All-Century golf student-athlete, the only women’s basketball student-athlete to record a triple-double in program history and one of the greatest hitters in volleyball program history will make up the 2013 UCCS Athletic Hall of Fame.
Philanthropist Glenn Williams, golfer Marc Hocking, volleyball hitter Audrey Nelson and women’s basketball guard Stephanie (Frisch) Leasure will be members of the second class of the UCCS Athletic Hall of Fame.
“We’re excited to recognize the accomplishments of these individuals and celebrate their accomplishments,” Steve Kirkham, director, Athletics, said. “These individuals laid the foundation for Mountain Lion athletics.”
Williams was a long-time supporter of women’s athletics at UCCS. After he retired as an academic administrator at Eastern Illinois University in 1992, he moved to Colorado Springs with his wife, Joan, and the two began to attend Mountain Lion softball games. The two established the Glenn D. and Joan R. Williams Endowment for Women’s Athletics which supports women’s student-athletes in softball, cross country, track and field, soccer, basketball and volleyball, and the softball coach position.
Williams died April 28, 2011. A 12-foot statue at the entrance to Mountain Lion Field, “Dedicated to Excellence”, which features a UCCS softball student-athlete fielding a grounder, was dedicated in his memory. Williams commissioned Denny Haskew of the National Sculpture Guild to create the sculpture.
Hocking was the 2002 RMAC golf champion with an 11-under par. He led the Mountain Lions to its first two national tournament appearances in 2002 and 2003 and two RMAC championships in 1999 and 2003. He was a member of the RMAC All-Century Men’s Golf Team in 2009.
Leasure was the first Mountain Lion to earn All-RMAC honors in women’s basketball history, and did it twice in the 1996-97 and 1998-99 seasons. She’s second in program records for career three-pointers (176), career free throws made (296), career assists (354) and third with 1,224 career points. She recorded the only triple-double in program history against Colorado State-Pueblo on Jan. 29, 1997 and set the single-game record for assists with 11 in that game.
In only two seasons with the Mountain Lions, Nelson still stands sixth in volleyball records with 975 career kills. She has four of the top five performances in program history for kills in a match and holds the program record with 568 kills in a season. Nelson was an All-RMAC First Team selection in 2001 after she earned a second team nod in 2000.
